As soon as I took the exit and saw I was in the older section of Birmingham, I knew the food would be fire. The deeper I got into the neighborhood the more I knew the grill would be well seasoned and the staff would be my auntie's age with attitude. This isn't a 5 star restaurant from the looks inside and out but the food is home cooked goodness. It's the traditional diner setting from years ago. Nothing fancy but it was clean. Well I was right by all accounts. That was definitely an auntie taking orders and probably her sister, if not her mom, on the grill. When I saw all that bacon and real scrambled eggs, I knew I needed to treat this as the last great meal I'll eat for a while. The food was seasoned and hot and the staff was somewhat friendly. Supporting local businesses is so important, regardless of what city you're visiting.

AMAZING FOOD. Happened upon this place when traveling through. It was about 2:00pm and you would expect the menu options to be limited and maybe old. If it was limited, we didn't notice. Best Lima beans, okra., fried fish, mac and cheese and greens I've ever put in my mouth. My husband said the candied yams and Salisbury steak were fantastic. The sweet tea was truly southern. The peach cobbler was classic. Totally worth the detour. And we will be back!

Food here is great. I come for breakfast often since it's a walk away and they have a private room decked out with local sport memorabilia and historical photos that add a lot of character to the place and makes you feel right at home. We host some meetings there and bring groups. The staff is excellent and I love interacting with them, the provide great service. My favorite is the chicken and waffles but I love that they'll work with you give you what you need.

If you visit Miles College in Fairfield, leave time to stop at this classic soul food place. It's located across from city hall in the heart of the old town's commercial district. Anyplace that serves blackeye peas, butter beans and pintos all at lunch rates high in my book--all freshly prepared and not ladled with salt. Go hot sauce instead! There is a decent salad bar too. Solid Mac and cheese. I could just do the veggies and be happy. There is always well prepared fried chicken--crispy but not dry, well drained and not greasy. But try the smothered pork chops or chopped steak. A real treat. Want neckbones? They got them. Sunday always features BBQ but be prepared to wait. Everyone goes here. And why not? Reasonable prices, big selection, friendly service. A must for this part of Birmingham.
